Testosterone Therapy for Men

According to a recent study from Canada pulished in this month’s Journal of Urology, Testosterone therapy may be safe in men with #prostatecancer. 82 hypogonadal men received #testosterone replacement therapy. They all had prostate cancer and were receiving either active surveillance or they had undergone curative therapy. None of the patients had adverse clinical events. The study suggests suggests that t#estosteronetherapy is an option for men with low testosterone levels and prostate cancer. More @drjonlazare

Latest Urology Update

A new study in the Journal of Urology claims that every year, 4500 men undergoing prostate biopsy receive the wrong diagnosis due to mislabeling or contamination of the biopsy specimens. The cost of these mistakes, in dollars alone, exceeds 800 million dollars. Newer molecular DNA tests are being studied to eliminate this problem.

American Urological Association Annual Meeting

Just returned from the annual meeting of the American Urological Association in New Orleans. Many new developments. Advances made on many fronts including chemotherapy for prostate cancer, MRI for the diagnosis of prostate cancer, active surveillance for prostate cancer and minimally invasive approaches for the percutaneous removal of kidney stones. Finally, one presenter raised the concern about a possible association with Viagra and the development of prostate cancer and malignant melanoma.
