Coumadin and Erectile Dysfunction

Blood pressure and erectile dysfunctionErectile dysfunction happens when a man is unable to get or keep an erection long enough to have intercourse. While some men are completely unable to get an erection, others can achieve it but lose it before they are ready. Most adult men have erectile dysfunction at some point. The problem usually goes away without treatment. If, however, it does not, you may need to seek treatment.

Coumadin, also known as Warfarin, is a medication that treats blood clots. It is often used to prevent blood clots that may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Certain conditions may increase your risk of having blood clots; they include; irregular heart rhythm, recent heart attacks, and knee replacement surgery.

Coumadin facilitates the smooth flow of blood in the body. It reduces the number of clotting proteins in your blood. The relationship between Coumadin and erectile dysfunction is not entirely clear. However, blood thinners are often linked to erectile dysfunction.

No Evidence

An erection happens when blood fills two chambers in the penis. The process is triggered by nerve impulses from your brain to the penis. Anything that may interfere with the impulses or blood flow can cause erectile dysfunction.

Even though no evidence links Coumadin and erectile dysfunction, many believe that it may have an impact on a man’s sex drive and that it may cause erectile dysfunction. However, the manufacturers of the drug do not list sexual dysfunction as one of its side effects.
