How Quickly Does A Vasectomy Work

There are numerous birth control methods for women but much fewer for men. There are essentially two methods of birth control for men. Condoms are the most common male birth control method. The other way is a vasectomy. A vasectomy is a surgical procedure that involves cutting the vas deferens, which is the tube that transports sperm from the testicles to the penis. A man can still ejaculate after a vasectomy, but it will not contain any sperm. A vasectomy is an option for men who want to become sterile permanently. If you are one of those men and live in Brooklyn, you should pay a urologist in Brooklyn, New York, a visit.

The Vasectomy Procedure

First and foremost, to get a vasectomy, you have to be a viable candidate for the procedure. The first requirement is that you need to be willing to be barren for the rest of your life. Only men who are sure they don’t ever want children should undergo the procedure.  You also need to prepare for the procedure adequately. Preparation will include using blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medication to reduce bleeding during the process. You should organize transport to and from the doctor’s office.

There are two types of vasectomies: conventional and no-scalpel vasectomies. The former involves making an incision in the skin of the scrotum to cut the vas deferens. The latter involves punching a hole in the scrotum to access the vas deferens. Both procedures typically take less than twenty minutes unless something goes wrong.

Vasectomy Recovery

You can often go home right after your procedure. However, you will need a few days of rest before the pain subsides and the area around your scrotum stops being sore. An ice pack will be ideal for helping with the pain and soreness.

Your doctor will advise you to refrain from strenuous physical activity after your vasectomy for several days. The same goes for any sexual activity, no matter how light including

  • Masturbation
  • Oral sex
  • Sexual Intercourse

After a week, you should be as good as new and can have sex. Therefore, after a week is when you can begin to find out whether the vasectomy worked or not. To find out if the vasectomy worked will take time because the only way to know is if your partner does not get pregnant after having sexual intercourse. You must note that the vasectomy will not prevent pregnancy right away. Even after a week of abstinence, there may still be healthy sperm swimming around in your tubes.

In fact, you may still have a positive sperm count up to three months after the procedure. Therefore, you should continue wearing a condom during the recovery period. Your partner should also use birth control during that time. It is recommendable to go for a sperm count test eight to sixteen weeks after the procedure. The test will include leaving a sperm sample at the doctor’s office. Only then can you know if it is safe for you to have unprotected sex. A vasectomy is an effective method of birth control. You will heal after a few days and may resume sexual activity after a week. However, you can only know if the vasectomy worked after three months and a sperm count test.
