What is Green Light Laser TURP?
The green light laser TURP is a treatment used for benign prostatic hyperplastic – BPH.
The green light laser TURP is similar to the conventional TURP. However, there are some important differences.
The green light laser procedure helps to relieve the symptoms of BPH:
- Slow urination
- Daytime and night-time urinary frequency
- Urgency to urinate
- Urgency incontinence
- Incomplete bladder emptying
What Are the Pros and Cons of the Green Light Laser TURP?
The main advantage of the green light laser TURP is that it involves little or no blood loss. This procedure can even be performed upon men who are taking blood thinners!
After the Green Light Procedure, you can expect the following benefits:
• Improvement in urinary symptoms
• A quick return to normal activities
• Minimal blood loss
• Long-lasting results
• Removal of the catheter in less than 24 hours
The only downside of this procedure is that patients can develop inflammation of the prostate as a result of the laser energy. This can produce uncomfortable urination for up to 4 weeks post-op.
How to Prepare for the Green Light Laser TURP Procedure
The first step towards the green light laser TURP procedure is a consultation appointment with Dr. Lazare. During this time, he will review your medical history and perform a physical exam. You will also be able to ask any questions that you may have.
Prior to your procedure, you will also be asked to stop smoking as soon as possible to ensure an issue-free recovery.
The Green Light Laser TURP Procedure
The green light laser TURP is performed under general or spinal anesthesia. To start the procedure, Dr. Lazare inserts a scope through the tip of the penis into the urethra. He then advances the scope to the prostate. The prostate is a male sex gland that surrounds the urethra – the urethra is the tube in the penis through which the urine flows. When the prostate enlarges, it compresses the urethra and blocks the flow of urine.
Dr. Lazare then inserts a laser fiber through the tip of the scope. Using this laser fiber, he vaporizes the inside of the prostate. This results in the elimination of urinary blockage. The procedure usually takes less than 90 minutes.
Green Light Laser TURP Recovery
Following the procedure, you can go home the same day or the following morning. The catheter is often removed prior to discharge from the hospital.
If, following the surgery, you observe that your urine is red or if you see large blood clots in your urine, call Dr. Lazare right away. You should also notify Dr. Lazare if you develop a fever over 100.5 Fahrenheit.
During recovery, it is recommended that you avoid strenuous activities such as heavy lifting, for a minimum of two weeks. You should also avoid sex for 2 weeks. Dr. Lazare will provide you with specific post-op instructions to ensure optimal results.
