Which Circumcision Method Is Best?

Many boys undergo circumcision as a baby. Their parents may do it primarily for religious reasons, but there are other reasons for the procedure. A circumcised penis is often healthier and less prone to bacteria and diseases. In fact, studies show that circumcision protects against penile cancer and urinary tract infections (UTIs). Plus, to some, a circumcised penis just looks better.

If you didn’t get circumcised as a child, not all is lost. You can still get the procedure performed as a teen or adult. Many males get circumcision done for cosmetic reasons. You may have experienced scarring or discoloration. Or maybe you just prefer the aesthetics of a penis without foreskin. In any case, you may be a good candidate for cosmetic circumcision and Lazare Urology can help.

Common Types of Circumcision

Circumcision can be performed in a number of ways. The most common ones include:

  • Plastibell. Also known as the ring method, the Plastibell is the most common method of circumcision, especially among infant boys. It involves a clear plastic ring with a handle. The foreskin is then cut horizontally to allow it to be retracted so that the glans is exposed. The Plastibell is placed on the head. The foreskin is then pulled over the ring and the skin is crushed against the groove in the Plastibell. The handle is broken off at the end of the procedure and the excess skin is then trimmed off. The compression causes the foreskin tissue to die, with the ring falling off in 3-14 days.
  • Shang Ring. This is a single use device that consists of an inner and outer ring. The inner ring is placed below the head of the penis. The foreskin is then rolled back and is wrapped over the inner ring. Then the outer ring is placed over the inner ring. The clasp is tightened, removing the extra skin.
  • Mogen Clamp. This method is quick and easy. The foreskin is extended over the head of the penis and captured in a slot on the clamp. The clamp stays in place while the foreskin is cut away.
  • Sleeve Resection Method. This method is most commonly used for young boys and adults. It involves incisions made with a scalpel in the foreskin. First, the foreskin is slid back along the shaft and a freehand cut is made around the shaft. The foreskin is then returned to cover the glans and another cut is made around the shaft at the same position along the first cut. Another cut is made between those two cuts and the strip of skin is removed.
