What is a Urologist?
A Urologist is an internist and a surgeon. We treat disorders of the urinary tract including diseases of the kidney, bladder and prostate. We also treat disorders of the male sexual system including male infertility and ED. Additionally, we treat disorders of the penis and the testis. About 25 % of my patients are women and 75% of my patients are men.
Erectile Dysfunction. The treatment of men with ED is a step wise process. In the long term, diet and exercise are important. We start with the pills – Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis. If they don’t work we try penile injection therapy with Prostaglandin E1. *The final step is the 3 piece penile implant which has the best overall results.
Urinary Tract Infections in Young Women. This is an incredibly common problem and is usually due to sexual intercourse whereupon bacteria in the vagina are transferred into the bladder. Infections can be prevented with a single antibiotic pill taken after sex.
BPH or Benign Enlargement of the Prostate in Men. BPH is common in older men and can block the flow of urine. Treatment starts with medication including Flomax and Avodart. If the pills are not effective, I usually perform Green Light Laser Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate. *Results are usually excellent. *In most men, the procedure has no impact upon the erection or the orgasm. Some men may have less ejaculate or no ejaculate after the procedure.
Kidney Stones. The best treatment for small and medium stones in the kidney or ureter is ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy. This involves placing a small fiber optic telescope into the ureter and disintegrating the stone under direct vision. For larger stones in the kidney, I perform a procedure called Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy. This is a similar procedure except that the approach is through a small opening in the back.
Urinary Incontinence in Women. The mid-urethral sling procedure is highly effective in the treatment of women with stress urinary incontinence. The procedure is quick and is performed on an out-patient basis. *Results are excellent in most patients.
Male Infertility. I perform the microscopic varicocelectomy procedure upon infertile men with large varicoceles. *Results are usually excellent and morbidity is minimal.
