Types of Urology Surgery

There are several reasons why you should see a urologist. When you visit a urologist, they may perform various urology surgical procedures to diagnose and address urologic conditions. The primary types of urology surgery include:

  • Vasectomy

Vasectomy is a surgical technique for male birth control that is permanent. During the operation, the doctor cuts and seals the vas deferens holding sperm from the testicles to close off the flow of sperm to the sperm.

  • Prostatectomy

The term “prostatectomy” refers to various surgical procedures that remove some or all of the prostate gland. Prostate cancer, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), and other prostate gland disorders are treated through Prostatectomy. The operation may be done:

  • Openly
  • Laparoscopically
  • Robotically
  • Nephrectomy

A nephrectomy is a surgical operation in which part or more of the kidney is removed. It is commonly used to treat cancer and other kidney disorders, as well as to remove a weakened organ or a healthy kidney for transplantation. As with prostatectomy, the operation may be done openly, laparoscopically, or robotically.

  • Adrenalectomy

Adrenalectomy is a surgical operation to remove one or both adrenal glands situated just above the kidneys and contain hormones. Adrenalectomies are often performed to remove benign or cancerous tumors from the adrenal gland.

  • Ureteroscopy

Ureteroscopy is a surgical technique that uses a small, flexible instrument called a ureteroscope to look into the kidneys and urinary tract and diagnose and treat problems. It’s most commonly used to treat kidney or ureteral stones. It can also look for and treat cysts, tumors, or irregular tissue in the bladder, ureter, or kidney lining.

  • Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP)

Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is a procedure on the prostate gland for men who have difficulty urinating due to the prostate gland’s enlargement.

  • Male Circumcision

Circumcision is a surgical operation that involves removing the skin covering the tip of the penis, referred to as foreskin. It is a treatment widely performed on newborn boys all over the world, including the United States.

  • Pyeloplasty

Pyeloplasty is a surgical procedure that removes the kidney’s renal pelvis, which collects urine after it is produced. There is frequently a blockage at the renal pelvis’s junction and the ureter known as a Pelvic Ureteric Junction (PUJ) obstruction. It must be addressed to prevent long-term complications such as kidney failure, urinary infections, and the formation of kidney stones.

  • Hysterectomy

The uterus is surgically removed during a hysterectomy (womb). Ovarian cancer, heavy or painful menstrual cycles, extreme pelvic pain, fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease are all common reasons for this procedure.
